Cash discount pricing
Cash Discount Program: Stop Paying Credit Card Processing Fees
Under a cash discount program your listed prices are the card price, and customers who pay with cash get an automatic discount at the register. Here is how it works, who it fits, and what New York requires.
How a cash discount program works
Your listed prices are the credit card prices, meaning the cost of accepting cards is already built in. When a customer chooses to pay with cash, the system automatically applies a discount at the register. You protect your margins, and cash buyers get a perk.
Cash discounting is a legal program in all 50 states. It is also optional: you are free to choose traditional processing instead, and if you ever want to switch programs, we will help you do it.
Who it fits
It works best where the transaction is simple and the customer decides at the counter.
Quick service & cafés
Short tickets, fast decisions, and a customer standing at the register.
Restaurants · cafés
Retail & convenience
Posted prices and a counter transaction. The program runs without extra steps from staff.
Retail · convenience stores
Salons & barbershops
A service ticket settled at the chair or the front desk.
Salons · barbershops
Similar counter businesses
If the customer chooses how to pay at the register, the program is usually worth modeling.
Counter-service businesses
Where tickets are high, the business is B2B, or most sales are online, traditional pricing is often the better fit. We will tell you which one honestly, and that includes telling you when to stay where you are.
What it is worth: the math
Start with your effective rate: total fees charged ÷ total card volume. As an illustration, a business paying 3.5% on $50,000 a month in card volume is losing $1,750 a month, or $21,000 a year, to processing fees. That is the figure a cash discount program is designed to attack. The calculator on our homepage runs your own numbers, and a free statement review confirms them against your real statement.
Doing it compliantly in New York
New York’s rules on credit card pricing are stricter than most of the country, and the setup details matter: which price is posted, where, and how the terminal prints it. Cash discount and dual pricing have both been treated as permitted, while a surcharge added only at checkout is not. Our guide to New York’s GBL §518 walks through the state’s own examples. Before you go live, we configure signage, receipt text and terminal programming to match.

What is a cash discount program? Do we have to use it?
Cash discounting is a legal program in all 50 states. Your listed prices are the credit card prices, and customers who pay with cash get an automatic discount at the register. It typically offers the greatest savings, but you are free to choose traditional processing instead.
Will my customers be annoyed?
Some will notice. Very few walk. What determines the reaction is whether it feels like a surprise, so clear signage at the door and the counter, and staff who can explain it in one sentence, is the whole game.
Why don’t I switch to cash discount with my current processor?
Most banks and national processors either do not offer the program or are content collecting your processing fees. They rarely walk you through the reprogramming or equipment changes.
Can I use my existing equipment?
Sometimes some equipment can be reprogrammed, but in most cases you will need new hardware. Many businesses we work with qualify for free equipment or discounted pricing.
I’m locked into a contract. Can I switch?
In our experience many contracts can be cancelled for $300–$500, and the monthly savings usually cover that quickly. Bring your agreement and latest statement and we will review the exit terms together. Sometimes the right move is to wait, and we will say so.
Is a cash discount the same as a surcharge in New York?
No. A surcharge adds a fee at checkout and requires up-front disclosure of the total card price under GBL §518. A cash discount lists the card price and discounts cash. Our NY surcharge guide explains the difference.
